    Tying streamers

when you try to tie streamers
you are trying to make it look like a bait fish or a minnow/smelt. A real bait fish has a black, brown or green back to match the bottom structure and a white or yellow belly to match the sky when you look up at it so it doesnt get eaten.

Wouldnt it make sence to reverse the coulors so it stands out more like a uncamoflage helpless bait fish? ??? way easyer for the trout to see i would think.

    like this:

i didnt tie this i would do better

In my ex. on the Res around here. Fish come up from over 100ft of water to take our baitfish. Color is an attractor and the motion of your offering means more. A little flash and some flowing materials should give you the motin and the shine of a struggling bait. Of cours different days require different colors to interest the fish.

thanks... ya sure, no problemo. for the fly pictured:

thread - black or white, you pick the strength.
    hook - partridge salars #2.
body - gudebrod metallic braid. flat. rainbowy silver... can't remember the specific color's name.
rabbit strip - white barred. black marker skin strip prior to tying in.
rib - 2 med/fine copper wires, wrapped together thru rabbit.
throat - fine white fish hair like material. tied kinda' long, covering hook point.
over wing - a few of each: pale blue fine krystal flash topped with dark brown.
hackle - grizzly hen, soft and dark.
    whip 'n lacquer head.

i tie a bunch of variations, differing rabbit color, body. sometimes wgt'd. sometimes with eyes (painted, jungle cock or barred wood duck). sometimes with a stinger hook. also, a red gil slash looks lovely at times... i forgot to tie that in on the fly pictured.

    hows :

tie in copper, leave hanging out ass of hook.
tie in body at front. wrap to rear and then back up front.
    tie in rabbit at front.
wrap copper around twice as tag, and then begin binding down rabbit working to front of hook.

    Re: Tying streamers

i like to strip streamers across the current using a streamer designed sink tip (depending on water flow, 150 - 300 grains) with a very short leader. small flies get a 2x, larger ones 0x. maybe 2 ft.

once the water warms i switch to a clear intermediate line with a sinking polyleader with a short pc of terminal leader.

haven't been to the Hsy since the late 80s. nice river. try a version with natural to dark brown rabbit strip with a large yellow throat on that river. gold braid body. yellow grizz hackle. wgt it.
