Dry fly Leader, and tippet type

    Hey there guys,

I was wondering if anyone has a good dry fly leader formula that they wouldn't mind sharing :-) I have been using the HENDs 350cm French leader, then adding 016, then 012 as my tippet. Seems to nice and supple, accurate, parachute casts nicely :-)

Also, i'm trying to look for a good tippet for dries (fly size 16 - 20).. i have been using Dairiki Velvet in the past - look for a product that is very similar properties.

    Cheers

I like the RIO 15 foot spring creek leaders.

The Harvey Slack Leader is also very good.

Curious to see how others set up for dry fly fishing...

Re: Dry fly Leader, and tippet type

    Hi

I use to fish quite big rivers with very educated fishes. So my leader is quite long (4.8 m) with a long tippet (2m).
Quite fast leader, good for nice presentation and avoiding the dragging.
It's a polyvalent leader that I use for dry or nymph (seeing the fish)

    cm - diameter

    70 - 50°°
    60 - 40°°
    50 - 35°°
    40 - 25°°
    30 - 20°°
    30 - 15°°
    tippet
    200 - 14°° or 12°°

if I go down to 10°° I put a section of 30cm 14°° before the tippet.
If there is wind, I just cut the tippet to 1.5 m or 1.2 m.

That Maxima Chameleon is hard to come by.... It's sold out at Cabelas every week and Bass Pro doesn't even carry it. Luckily, The Bean does...

Everything so far is good info.

I vary my leader and tippet size depending on the fly, and type of water.

Most any 12' - 15' tapered leaders right out of the package work fine and cover virtually all situations.

That's all I'm going to say because Mantis covered the subject pretty well.

    Troutastic

Get your Maxima from fly fishers paradise. www.flyfishersparadise.com is the website. Greate prices, fast shipping, lots of materials. You will have to call or send for a magazine. They don't sell online.

My God that is complex. No wonder I suck at dry fly fishing.

I use the Harvey slack leader tied with Orvis Superstrong/and Rio tippet. Works great!
I also have used the Gary Borger Uni-Leader dry fly formula. I tie it with Chameleon then Orvis SS or Rio tippet.
A good source of Chameleon is hook and hackle. I've ordered a few times and they always seem to have it.

FYI the Uni-leader formula is as follows: 4ft .020, 1ft .013, 4ft .010, then 2 ft-4ft of( 4x or 5x) and if necessary 2ft (,6x,7x-your choice), modify the length of the leader with the butt section(.020). Its any easy formula and works well but I like the Harvey formula better(probably suits my presentation/casting style better??)
    relocated to the Rockies!
