That rod would work quite well on the small streams as you mentioned. The only thing that I might consider is how frequently you are going to nymph versus dry fly. If you are going to nymph more than dry fly fish, it's perfect. If I wanted a rod to primarily fish dries with and nymph with on occasion, then I would want a nine and a half footer. The only dilema would be that there are no 3 weights in that configuration this I can think of, especially at around the 300 dollar mark.
