Here's a super simple soft-hackle/flymph pattern for you wet fly fans, now that it's Caddis time:
Wet fly hook, size to match natural.
Antron dubbing, match color to natural (usually tan, green or olive, but also other colors such as brown)
-brush out antron with velcro to form a "veil" around the fly.
Front the fly with about 2 (or 3 at most) turns of soft hackle, trailing back to about the hook bend or slightly
beyond. Match hackle to natural- try partridge, woodcock or an appropriate shade of hen neck.
Fish fly in classic wet fly style, down & across. Try also bouncing bottom in a nymph rig w/ strike indicator & split shot- deadly! You can also try dead drifting behind and Elk Hair or X-Caddis on a 12-18" dropper off the hook bend.
A Redneck's last words, "Hold my beer while I do this...."
I tie a similar fly with ice dub on a curved caddis hook with some peacock or black ice at the head and instead of soft hackle, tie in some webby hen fibers underneath from head to hook point for legs. Lovely on the upper D! Caddis green is a killer.
You can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish.
