    Re: Trout in the classroom

    Aaron,
The big ones (brown trout) are about 1.75 ", with the smaller browns just over 1.50" I have a few brook trout that hatched about two weeks after the browns and they are about 1.50"
I am sure I could get them to grow faster if I cranked up the temp. into the low 60's, but I keep the tank at 52-54 F. so I don't have to clean the tank more often than once a week. I will be over at the school tomorrow and will take some new photos & post 'em on this thread.

    Michael

P.S. We are headed down to CT on Wed. Might do some nymphing if the weather is not too cold.

Just listened to the local 5th grade class talk about there Trout in the Classroom today. Wow it is way cool and the kids really were into and the the parents were praising how much there kids were being positively influenced by it. On a sad not the local school board may not allow the Teacher to apply for the grant to fund the project for next years class. It is terrible if they let that happen its all about test scores and not teaching what is important any more. I was very impressed and TU really hit a home run with this project.

I'll bet the high school football team gets all the funding it needs!

    Re: Trout in the classroom

Our TU Chapter, the Tulpehocken Chapter, has co-sponsored the same project in two of our county school districts, Oley Valley and Hamburg Area School Districts. At our last meeting, the environmental science teacher gave us a presentation on her high school project. They are raising brook trout to release into a class A stream near the school. It is great to see the kids so excited about the project.

I hope to convince our Gifted Teacher in our building to look into a grant and work the project with our 6th graders. I would be willing to assist, it is a tremendous amount of maintenance. The whole thing is great. The presence or lack of presence of brook trout is a great measurement of the health of our streams.

    Keep on keeping on!

    LopatNympher,

You got it what is said is that they are sayingn no to grant money. To me that makes no sense its there for a reason. My local school district is really out of touch with the world they had teachers strikes for 4 or 5 strait years. Its sad very sad.
