SloNDeep, nice pattern, is that z-lon on the back as a carapace? I also posted pictures of my fly (plunge hellgrammite) to the gallery, fly section. Thanks for your many comments.

    FK

That's my "secret" bugger hackle - got it at a craft store. It's called Boa material

The material over the top is swiss straw

The rib is tan carpet/upholstery thread

The underbody is a grey rabbit (I think) dubbing blended with black and tan

    Tie 'em up guys!

here is a pattern that rckrego sent me. it looks like it would work really well in smaller sizes and if you changed some of the materials to add motion.

SloNDeep, you still didn't answer, how does it fish? I've seen many Helgramite patterns over the years, and they almost always disappoint when I finally fish them. Did you get a chance to field test it yet? I really like the look and simplicity of it.

I've caught fish on it, never many, but have never fished it in prime hellgramite time.

I have a really simple pattern for some of the smaller larva in this family. I will post a picture of it when I tie some more.

I tied it as a fishfly imitation (Megaloptera).

Here is a fishfly picture that Tom Ames has on his site

It's in the same family as the hellgramite and alder

The ones I have kicked up have typically been about 3/4 inch long. I tie them on size 12 or 10 2XL hooks.
They have been great producers on many smaller streams for me

The link to Tom Ames site with the above picture is: http://www.thomasames.com/insects/other/fishfly.htm
