    Midge Larva, micro-tubing

I've been tying a lot of midge larva, specifically with micro-tubing.

I've discovered something which is probably common knowledge already, but will post my finding anyway. The pure midge larva (another Barr pattern) is a very simple pattern, with sizes 18-22 being the most often used. My favorite hook is the Tiemco 2488H.

When tying the micro-tubing, I start from the hook eye, then tie my thread to lock it down all the way to the middle of the bend, however, I STRETCH (by pulling) the tubing when doing this, as not to create mass to the body. Then, after getting your thread and bobbin back to the hook eye, wrap the micro-tubing all the way up to the eye, BUT, WITHOUT stretching. This took me at least a half-dozen flies to realize: if you stretch the and tighten (like you would with a ribbing material), then the micro-tubing flattens, and creates a smooth surface. This, I believe is not wanted. The key factor of this larva seems to be the segmented texture. So, finally I came to the conclusion that the most effective way to wrap the micro-tubing is lightly but firmly, without stretching. Again, this is probably basic knowledge. I'll try to post a picture of two examples, a poor one, and a better one.

On a related note, what other types of micro-tubing are there besides HareLine? Are there thicker gauged tubings, that are still thin enough for small-medium flies?

I believe Hareline makes at least 2 bigger sizes, maybe even 3. I'll look it up at work if I can remember.

    Dave..

Also along with the micro-tubing there is D-rib and V-rib....

    Both work AWESOME for those...
The Micro-tubing you are talking about is a hollow round tube right?

try the v-rib... you'll see a big differance

Dave, I am with you completely on this one. The type of detail you say is exactly what a fly-tier needs, but rarely gets from a book. I've been experimenting the same way. I love the fluoroscent red version in Barr's book, I simply must buy that thread! Also, I absolutely love the UTC70 threads in general-for thread bodied flies there is simply none better! I've been using Uni-thread all this time for this application, but it's all wrong. Now, I simply have to buy UTC70 in all colors!

I agree on the UTC70 thread,,,,,Nymphmeister showed me a trick last month,,,,,use an underwrap of UTC thread then overlay the clear micro tubing,,,,,,nice effect.

Yes, I too have really come to love the UTC 70 thread. Absolutely perfect for tying PML and other types of midges. Alain, I know exactly what you mean, the fluorescent red version is my favorite, and has been my best midge during this winter. I've tried to grab all the possible colors for the UTC70 possible.

Leonard, I've tried the V-rib, but not the d-rib. Nutman, I haven't used the larva lace, but will seek that out too.

Nymphmeister, were you ever able to search the gauges of the Hareline microtubing?

I've been working on the PML as well lately. Trying to get a bunch of different colors in to load the arsenal, and have several ties in the fire red. I will post a photo later today when I get back from work. I'm using small clear v-rib for some, and experimenting a little with d-rib and this stuff called Stretch Magic, which I found in a Michael's craft store. The .5mm diameter spool is even thinner than the small v-rib, and is round in diameter.

Here's a photo of what the stuff looks like:

Here's a photo of some of the midge larvae I've been tying:

The tighter/smaller rib is the stretch magic and the slightly more bodacious rib is done with small v-rib. You can see the difference!
Can't wait to try these puppies out.
