Best rod for euro and indicator nymphing

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions (LOL) as to whether any of the 10' euro nymph rods would work well for indicator nymphing as well. Out west when drift boat fishing, you use an indicator with lots of split shot. When stop along the way, you could indicator fish or euro nymph. My thoughts are to get a 4 wt rod as it would handle the weight used in indicator nymphing better.
The second part of the equation is that a 10' four piece rod is about all that you can pack in an airline approved duffel. I was thinking about the Grey's streamflex plus in a 4 weight as it should be easily packable and yet accomplish what a good fishing tool should.
    Your thoughts are appreciated.

How much is your spending limit? I have a few SAGE Ones in a ten foot 4 and 5 weight. If that is too much the TFO BVK in a ten foot four weight would be a great alternative and it does not have the breakage issues the the rod you mentioned does.

When I indicator nymph, I use a ten foot five weight most of the time for the reasons that you mentioned. This is the one reason why I like faster action rods like the ONE. It handles all of the weight easily and casts wonderfully straight. Go pick one up and give it a wiggle.

If I understand you correctly, the 10' 4wt BVK might be a good all around choice if I don't throw too much lead with it. The Sage One would be the better choice if price were no object. (Also in a 4wt)?

10' 5wt Sage VXP does both pretty well

    threedollarbridge,

You are correct. If price is not an issue the ONE would be very nice. I've EU nymphed with it a few times just to see how it handles. I use that rod along with the 10 foot 5 weight for indicator nymphing. If you are not using a lot of weight the 4 will be nice. On a side note, the rod is so light that it feels like it it going to break... but it won't, it's just that light!

I am having allot of fun with my new purchase..
After spending some time investigating the different trout forums and blogs, I decided on the Hends XP 9003 / 1023 with extender. This suits both my budget and fishing requirements. Basically it's a two in one rod, used by allot of the Czech competition fly fisherman, a four piece with an additional fifth section used as an the extender.

The guys at Irishflytying hooked me up with this baby..

I'm was looking for a fly rod that I can use for Czech & French nymphing, wet and dry fly fishing, having the extender will allow me to change from a 10ft 2" to a 9ft in less than 30 seconds..This is a 2-3WT rod...

I have a Z Axis 4100 that I love. Its a great indicator rod and handles EU as well. I also have a Streamflex XF2 11 foot 4wt that I don't like as an indicator rod. I tried it a few times fishing deep pools in the winter, and although I loved the extra reach, the tip is too soft and too slow to get good hook sets fishing indicators deep. I think you would have the same problem in a drift boat. You are better off with a faster 10 footer if you want a rod to do a bit of both indicator and EU.

    Kevin,

What happened to your Streamflex after the butt section broke

I do agree the 10 foot 4 weight Z Axis is a great rod if you can find it. There might be some used ones left, but they were pretty expensive (because they are so good). Frank will tell you how nice they are as well. The ONE four weight is very similar.
