Catskill-Not my first fish on a fly-but the first catch on the first fly i've tied since I was 15!! (a scant 45 years ago!!) I was fishing the Elms on the Housatonic about three weeks ago. The night before I tied up a size 12 Bead Head Prince on my new Renzetti Traveler that Torrey up at HRO set me up with. I was using the BHP as an anchor with a size 20 BWO emerger dropper. FIRST CAST and a 15" brown assualted that Bead Head Prince!! WOW what a thrill!! Best catch I can remember in a long time. Needless to say I've been putting in a lot of OT at the tying bench-good to get back to my roots. Congrats on your first - when you get enough time try your hand at the vise-can't beat it!

My first was on the Housatonic too. It was a 12 inch rainbow. I remembet my friends Dad took us. I was fishing from the rail road track side swinging and stripping a size 6 black ghost with a size 10 bucktail dropper. I waded across the river to the upper car pool where he was waiting for me. I have a vivid memory of that special moment more than 40 years later. Deaddrift maybe we were on the river the same day!

My first trout was on the Musconetcong, 2 years ago. It was a 12 inch brown that pretty much hooked himself. I was fumbling with my vest and my line was still in the water when he took it.

Still to this day, I'm amazed at how many hook themselves when you're not even technically fishing. I'm also amazed to find how close these fish are to your feet. Just this past Saturday I threw a line straight upstream and led it back toward me only to have a fish take it not 4 feet above my feet.

the first trout on the fly for me was at the covered bridge pool on the beaverkill river in May just earlier this year the river was at 2,200 cfs and the normal flow is about 400 id say. so the water was high but me and my dad had made the trip over so we were gunna fish no matter what! so we threw dries on the far edge below the bridge and all together we caught 9 fish in the same spot all 8-12 inches. something im sure ill remember for years to come and somthing that has also sparked an addiction that made me fish about 6-9 times a week all summer long!! (yes i went multiple times a day, on multiple days, everyweek all summer lol)

Not my first fish which was a stocky on a green bugger, but maybe my first fish in the KLG, about a week layer. I was fishing a two fly rig, and had just finished a drift in a nice little pocket. I pulled the line out and thought I had snagged (for like the 70th time that day). So I to get the rod tip down so I can pull the snag out and the line starts to zig zag! A couple minutes later I had a nice bow in my net, my rig was totally fouled but I caught him! That was last April. I'm still pretty bad, but I tangle a little less.

My first fish on a fly was a Native Brook Trout in New England . Maybe nine inches. I caught it in a very small brook behind an ancient broken dam. The fly I used was a woven black and white stone-fly imitation. The year was 1960. I caught a lot of fish that day none bigger than ten inches. I used a floating line and a short leader. The flies were unweighted. I cast them out into the slack water , let the fly settle and used a simple weave retrieve . Someday if I am lucky I will fish that spot again.

I don't know if this counts or not but my first wasn't a fish. It was a bullfrog. When I was around 10 my Dad took me took his weekly golf game at Lindenwood Golf course in SW Pennsylvania. There was a large pond there that I fished. Of course at that age I noticed the big ole frogs before I did the fishing opportunities. I spotted one close to the shore and dangled a popper in front of his nose. He snapped at it immediately and I had a helluva time bringing it in. I fought it both in the water and on land. I finally managed to bring it in close enough to grab. I unhooked him and let him hop back into the water.
When they come to conficate your gun, LET THEM HAVE IT...........Then reload.
