Kenai Report: Fishing report, Wild Trout pics

So I went to visit my brother on the Kenai. He's a wild water guide and gets free use of a boat on his days off. So off we went. Water temp was 45C, we fished with big fat indicators and 7 weights, with "Sheen Beads", and flesh flies. Many Rainbows and Dolly Vardens were brought to hand.

All I have to Say is WOW. This is still early for trout fishing and it was still the best day of fishing of my life. I saw the biggest trout of my life lost. A big 30" rainbow my buddy hooked into. He ran to the backing and then bolted straight at the boat. A couple of flying leaps and bam, gone. That's why hes a 30" trout. I know what Ahab felt like on the Pequod.

Second day we went to a local creek, lots of Dollys and some Bows, this time with my 5 weight. Both places the Salmon are the major food source (eggs and dead flesh) so where theres Sockeye there is Trout. Unfortunately you catch one every once and awhile, and they destroy your leader more often than not. They're kind of like catching a log.

Fish up here fight like mad, plus the water is big and fast. I never heard drag on my real sing so much.

All in all, I caught more fish than I can remember. I stopped taking pictures after awhile, and just took it all in. Awesome trip.

I've been all over Flydaddy, a pure treasuin my life. I've seen many beautiful things so its hard to say. I can say its one of the most "Big" places I've ever been. It certainly ranks in the top for natural beauty. Plus the time spent with my brother was priceless.

How much does a trip like that cost for an average person (without a brother as a guide) I'm sure air fair was still pricy!

Sorry flydaddy, I didn't see your post, but since it's slow I'll respond.

I couldn't tell you what airfare was. I fly 100,000 miles a year, so ff miles are easy for me to come by. I'd say that was probably an 800-1000 dollar fare?

I can pm you the lodge, but I think the place is like 200 bucks a night? I don't even know what the float would cost, but figure it's probably more expensive than a full day float down in the lower 48. Food is generally included, the guides are coast guard licensed, some sections are limited to who can float, so I'd say it's probably double what you'd pay here. But I lost track of the fish caught, so what's that worth to you?

Now if you wanted to do it on the cheap, there's tons of park camp grounds, no cost, to very little. There's tons of wadable streams. I would recommend one float and one guided trip just to get the lay of the land. Bears are are worry, so be smart.

If you could do it with a buddy, there's economy of scale, three buddies and your set. Then other than airfare, it's pretty reasonable,

    Flydaddy,

Not sure where you plan to fly out of, but anchorage to boston is usually about 400-500 (this year anyway)

Some years it's closer to 800

Let me know when you plan to come up and I can probably help with questions. (Probably with fish also if I'm not working)

    Stan
