Every season I replace all of my tippet. Most company's will put expiration dates on the spools. The abuse you put your tippet through from being in the extreme hot and cold weather, and getting wet will break down mono or FC.
I forgot to mention another knot the palomar knot. I use it when I tie on larger flies like big anchors or streamers. The knot is VERY strong and never slips but the down side is that you can't use it on smaller flies since you have do double the line before passing it through the eye and it eats up a good bit of tippet.

I usually replace at the beginning of the season as well....the latest batch of 5x flouro is a recent purchase...maybe a bad spool. It happens. But in this case I think, as my grandfather used to say...it is the indian not the arrow.
