    Upper Housatonic 8/3/2008

Rather than guiding John on the Farmington I decided to take John to the upper reaces of the Housatonic.

The fishing was surprisingly good. We caught a mix of wild and holdover brown trout. We landed over 10 in close to five hours! I even was able to get a few!

We did well on caddis larvae, Small Mayfly nymphs and THE WORM .... what a surprise!

There was not a ton of insect activity but we saw some , ISO's, BWO's, caddis and a few summer stenos. The water temp was a cool 66 degrees. The fisah all fought valiantly and were quickly returned to the water.

John is our newest Euro n ymphing convert!

That is outstanding! Legitimate trout fishing on the Housatonic in August! Great.

    That is good news!

I think one good outcome of all our rain and t-storms this summer has been that it is keeping all the rivers and streams that get too warm or hang in the marginal temp zones in good shape. Even the Willimantic has been hanging out at around 68 which is pretty good this time of the year. I know some of the smaller streams East of CT River are doing o.k. too like the Hop,Fenton and Mt. Hope. Trout do survive in these streams with temps in the low 70's if there is water flow and they have had time to get acclimated to it. I haven't lived East of the CT. long enough to know if these streams get up to the dead zone of 80. I did know that the Fenton had a massive fish kill a couple of years ago but I think that it was largely related to UCONN sucking that river dry that year. I believe the state is now monitoring that.

Aaron I would luv to try the upper Housy in Lee. I can drive up w/the family, dump them at the outlets and then go fishing. Every one is happy. Any way can you pass on some milestones to access the river in the area?

You can access the river at any of the bridges throughout the town of Lee. The truth of the matter is that the whole entire stretch fishes well and there is not one "honey" hole per say. Give it a go you will like it. It has a much different character than the Housatonic in Cornwall. The water might have warmed some since I was there so check the temps. It was 66 degrees F when we arrived and 68 degrees when we left.

Oh... the entire stretch is "catch and release". The other sections of the river are one fish 20".
