Androscoggin River, July 6

Late report, sorry guys.

While passing through upper New England, I was in the neighborhood of the Androscoggin River in Maine. I brought my gear in the event that I had a few hours free. I wanted to hit the Rapid, but didn't have the time. Anyhow, I fished the confluences of Wild River, and Bear River. Got an early start and only had a few hours out. I fished a nymph rig ranging from heavy weighted large stones to smaller drab nymphs behind. The Andy is a HUGE RIVER, and I really mean huge. Had I the two handed spey, I would have been better off. Anyhow, water temp was reasonably cool, but not a single insect on the water. The Andy had been scourged years ago by SEVERE pollution. Had it not, the habitat would have been ideal for large, and mean LARGE trout. The entire river runs 280+ miles from NH through ME, then out to the coast. Many areas are deep, in the 30-40'+ range, and everything ranging from swift riffles to dangerously looking still pools. The tan stain reminds me of the Millers, which endured similar pollution. Regardless, the river still has to harbor some huge fish somewhere.

Out for a few hours, and had some decent catches of a few rainbows in the 12-14'' range, and a brook trout. All stocked fish. Scenery was great. Some of the locals told me that there are good populations of wild fish in the Wild River up top (sounds obvious).

The Andy (way up near Umbabog) is much, MUCH better fishing.


Fun to fish a new place, but hard to compare it to the trophy waters we have close by in western CT, NY and MA. Why drive so far? Sometime I do want to hit the Rapid for some trophy brookies.

Paul, I agree, the fishing in Errol at the Andy is superb. Trophy brook trout waters, and plenty of rainbows too. The River is more manageable up there in terms of size. As it progresses, it gets wider, and deeper. The water in NH is much, MUCH cleaner too, and from what I hear, they have excellent hatches, such as drakes among others.
