    chesterfield gorge

Took the drive up to Mass today to see if I could do some damage on the E. Branch of the Westfield in the Chesterfield Gorge.

The rainbows were very cooperative, but you had to pick your spots. I ended up driving to the end of the gated dirt road on the North side of the gorge and walked in (downstream) about a half hour from there. Most of the fish were holding in the cherry spots - deep holes. I fished the secondary places for awhile, but the fish just didn't seem to be there. So... with no one else out fishing, I decided to concentrate on the best holding water. I ended up with about 15, using Euro-techniques. 1 brown in the whole lot.

What a beautiful place and with 7 miles of C&R water and no one else there, it was pretty easy compared to the Farmington.

Water level was good for this time of year. Not high, but definitely not low as is typical for this time of year. Most of the fish fell for either a heavy prince nymph or iso nymph, but honestly, I think you could have gotten them on just about anything if you didn't spook them first. Most of the deep holes had at least 2 or 3 eager takers.

If you've never been there and are looking to fish someplace new, give it a try!

don't overlook indian hollow, which is below the gorge, proper.

there are also a couple nice deep pools below that in the Knightsville dam area that hold fish throughout the summer.-paul

Great report Brookie, we've got to hit the Westfield up for sure. The intimate nature of that river really seems appealing, not to mention your catches!
