    Paying your wet flies "dues"

I swore this would be the "year of the wet fly" for me, and I started out right by doing the fishing portion of Davy's Wet Fly Clinic at the shop. But.... I've been lax about actually fishing the wets now. I cannot seem to get away from the Euro style nymphing, I've been having so much fun with it, and most days it has been very effective indeed. Anyone else having trouble getting away from their "pet" techniques and giving the wets a good workout? Sorry Davy, I swear I will redeem myself and give the wets their due time in the water!

Mix the two up! Bring a rod rigged with the wets and the other with the nymphs.

Start off looking for active fish and whack them with the wets. When you get those fish go to the ones you can get with the weighted nymphs. If you see another active trout go to the rod with the wets and catch it, then go back to fishing nymphs. I have been doing this on certain streams while practicing and the catches are impressive and they are on really short stretches of water.

    so you can do both!

    Torrey,

Bring along a caddy with a bag full of rigged rods/reels. Reach back and say, 11ft wet rod, or 10ft long leader (oh, you do not know that system yet) the caddy will have a puzzled look on his face.

    Regards,

Wet flies are not just for whacking risers, no need for the nymphs. A two or three wet fly rig is a good way to go. Try patterns like a Greenwells Glory, Professor, Lead Wing Coachmen, Grizzly King, Captain, Alder, Blue Bottle, Black Turkey, Scarlet Ibis, Yellow Sally and so on. I came back from the Catskills about two weeks ago and did exceptional on size eight wet flies. I was catching risers and non risers. At 9:00 PM at night I caught and landed a 21 1/2 inch Brown above the Museum bridge on the Willowemoc on a size eight Yellow Sally. Now most of the other fish I caught averaged in the 9 to 13 inch range. I caught about 25 Browns and 2 Brookies. When the wet fly you are fishing stops working, this is when I truly go to a three wet fly rig and variate the colors of the flies. Most of the time I will find a fly that starts working. I am heading back up camping on the uppoer Willowemoc from July 3 - July 7, 2008. The only differance is this Trip I will only fish two wet flies called the Green Wisp and The Black Turkey. You will not find these patterns listed because the creator of these flies passed away last year. These are the only two flies that you will need during this time frame. Lastly this is the only time of the year that I will ever be found fishing dry flies. I always have much success during this time frame every year. I have a few not so known places where I go after wild Brookies in the erly AM and late eveing. Then it's back in camp enjoying a camp fire and a few roasted Marshmellows. Anyway I will pick this thread back up when I come back and then it's off the the Big Gun Powder in Maryland followed by some Trout fishing with my brother in North Carolina in August in the erly Am hours. The streams on the Indian Reservation does maintain a summer temp of 65 - 67 degrees.

Couldn't you have a bit of both worlds? Wet fly as your top dropper?

    Top dropper
    Heavy Anchor
    Lighter and smaller beaded nymph

    Just an idea.
