    Pequest River 6/14/2008

Slept in and decided to go local. A freind told me the fishing there was good right now. I had no idea how good it was! There might be over 1,000 trout that are visible from the bridge up. The surprising thing was that there were very few people there. We need people fishing there believe it or not. The fish will be poached out in a short time. I remember the same scenario last year. There were fish and all of a sudden they were gone. Heavy poaching is a killer here. Also, this big one would not be in the river for long if I did not relocate it. The fish is far away from where the picture was taken. I want that fish to be caught again and not snagged because it was in a shallow water lie. A spin guy was telling me that he was going to come back and snag it right out of there. He commented that it would get him on the wall of the local tackl shop. I could not belive that this guy would be telling someone this. Very sad.

Fish were caught on everyting from caddis larvae to green weenies, which is what the big one ate.

Aaron, great fish! I can believe what that angler (if you can call him that) told you. . .I remember we witnessed something similar the day after stocking on the SBR. Remember the herd of people trying to rip those lunkers out of the water?

Thanks for relocating, always nice to think that there are fish like that in the river while fishing. Also great to see fishing in t-shirts and summer gear.

I fished the Pequest several times last week and to say that there is a ton of fish in there is a huge understatement. It seems the hatchery had left over fish from the spring stocking and are cleaning out the raceways. I spoke to an old timer and he told me on Friday they dumped in 6 nets of brookies while he was fishing, that was on top of the hundreds of fish that were already in there.

That spot should be a no-kill and the problem there is not only the spin anglers but also some of the fly anglers. I watched a fly guy use 7x to hook one of the big rainbows, which is fine as long as you try to land the fish within a reasonable amount of time, he fought that fish like it was a 20lb steelhead, that's wrong also. You also get anglers who stand on the cold side and force the fish to the hot side, which will stress out the fish.

arron , i told you it was good , I agree with Johny L , there needs to better regulations in place . I was luck the week before to get a Huge rainbow on the river , when the fishing is tought on the rest of New jersey streams do to the heat , because of the heat last week you could count on the peaquest , we where fishing the lower river about a mile down and the water was cool .
