    Swift and Deerfield Rivers

Went up to Mass with Brookie. Arrived at the Swift at about 7:30. The action was decent on midges in red and black. We got bored of the "Y are you here" pool. We left to check out the Deerfield. Man that is an awesome river! We only foul hooked one fish. The scenery there is amazing! Big mountains and high cliffs make it look like you are out west. The river was high at 2,336 cfs so we weren't planning on much catching. I cannot wait to go back. There are such deep pools and long stretches of pocket water. I just want wait to see it minus 1500 cfs or so ;D I can see what the hype is about there. The fishing is great but the surroundings are even better.

I would guess that they are about a month and a half behind us. There is roughly about 3 feet of snow on the ground. The river that is already high will surely get even higher.

I saw the spot you almost went sledding down.

I too took the skunk. Spent about 2 hours in there and didnt bump a fish, it really blows when the wind picks up through there too. I fished just below the Acad as well and found the same smelly animal.

You are right about the scenery too, lots of great looking water, snowy hillsides, and signs of deer everywhere. You guys even stepped in some ;D

That's real cool. I plan on fishing the Deerfield this year several times. Different river and different water. I have heard good things about the river and I believe Fly Rod and Reel or Fly Fisherman, can't quite remember, recently had a good article on the river taht was really good.

its a great river...dont get too hung up on the catch and release areas...spots in between and below are good too. the c&r areas get pretty good fishing pressure during low water..so try other areas..there are some very large fish in that river if you poke around a bit.

The guys in the article, the Harrison brothers, they stopped in the shop last year. They were very nice, and definitely "into it". They showed me a pic of a big brown that was something like 25", and I think they said it was wild. Impressive. They also catch the occasional WHOPPER smallmouth, like up to 5#.
