That's really interesting. We hammered the fish all week long when we were in Alaska on the Russian and Kenai river along with a few creeks. Never had a one take it deep. However, your point goes directly to what a lot say about eggs in general and how fish eat them. They inhale them quick. That is why fishing the beads above a hook is better than fishing them directly on a hook. There are two schools of thought about the beads. That one and another is some feel it isn't fly fishing when using a bead. Well, I say this. We as flyfisherman use other types of flies to immitate a lot of other food sources i.e streamers to immitate baitfish, san juan worms, other worm patterns to imitate garden worms or nightcrawlers, crayfish, etc. Yeah I know they are tied on an actual hook but an egg is another food source. There are different ways to imitate an egg i.e glo worm, clusters, soft eggs, and beads. I have plenty tied on hooks and have caught fish on them. A few times the fish did take it deeper than what I liked. A hook below I believe helps with keeping the trout from swallowing it deep. I have been hammering the fish on the Farmy and Housy with beads the last 2 weeks or so and not one has taken it deep with hook being below. I also have another way of fishing them that works like a charm as well.

Yeah, the its not fly fishing thing is bull shit. All forms of fly fishing have been criticized as not being fly fishing in the past. After awhile they're accepted and the shit stops. Its like those dry fly purists that make me nuts. I say if you aren't gut hooking them then go for it. Shit, some of the best patterns have come from people using crazy materials. Look at the brassie. Those guys who invented that were stripping the wiring from machinery.

Exactly. A lot of the "purists" are sitting on the bank waiting for that one rise while I am nymphing my ass off and catching fish like a mad man. That is in general as well. Purists think that the nymphs are bullshit. There mentality is, if it's not on top, it ain't flyfishing. Well :P to them

I'll be back at it this afternoon on the Farmington. It's so warm I am taking a half day at work. It's too bad the MDC just reduced the flow! I will post fishing report tomorrow.

Fishing was good this afternoon, but the water was very low for some reason. I hooked 6 and landed 4, including this 20in male. Fish have beautiful coloration. I caught them all on egg patterns, but Mike also caught some in the morning using caddis imitations. The river was very crowded. By the way, we ate dinner at Portabellos Italian Restaurant near Dave's fly shop and the food was excellent. Right about when we quit fishing, MDC reopened the dam.
