    Troutastic,

Tendonitis falls into the same category I mentioned, overuse syndromes... In the mid-nineties I wrote an article on the biomechanics of flycasting in either Flyfishing in Saltwaters Magazine or Saltwater Flyfising Magazine, I can't remember which one! :-[

During the winter months I spend time in the weight room. I routinely spend over 20 hours a week fly fishing; sometimes 12 hour days. you probably need to strengthen muscles that are weak due to overuse. When I was learning to cast a fly rod I remember how sore my forearm would become after an hour or so of fishing. Wading rivers, making casts to far off places, standing all require a basic level of fitness. talk to a physical therapist or a personal trainer about your issues.

I strength train year round but I too will get sore from overuse of muscles when fly fishing. Usuallly after a long day of fishing big streamers. Check out ironmind.com for implements and info on hand strength. There are websites devoted to handstrength. You can never be truly strong without an extraordinary grip. After all, how can you do pullups or heavy deadlifts if your hands cannot support the weight? You can strengthen individual fingers; rock climbers do it. You start by hanging from a bar and then remove supporting fingers. Very few people need or have that kind of specialized finger strength but it is impressive to see.
You can also do finger tip pushups. That is much easier than finger tip hanging for obvious reasons, but no mean feat nonetheless.
Try not to squeeze the handle of your rod excessively when casting and try not to raise your elbow higher than your shoulder when casting. These last two actions do not add to your cast but do cause pain.
