Sherpa,
I am pretty sure that if the front was through, that was the major factor in the poor catch rates! You usually do very well. I would like to hear more about you comparisons of the two techiques.

Anecdotally I fished alot of euro style rigs last winter and did very well in certain spots. Sunday- I wasnt fishing the best spot on the Platte...about 10miles below Deckers at Nighthawk hill. The area is getting better but its not as fabulous as in deckers up to cheeseman. I am going to methodically go up the river to deckers this winter and try all the spots you might not be able to get into and get the lay of the land. On the indicator rigs Ive been using the thingamaboober...I have modified it a little in that I draw lines around it vertically so you can see a slight movement and I mean slight...some of the takes would result in a tilt of the bobber...or a slight spin movement. Once I got clued into how subtle the takes were...it made sense to put some lines on the thing and I have to say it was very helpful.
We can talk at length about weather especially fronts coming or that have gone. I think it makes a difference in my catch rates but it doesnt stop me from going out one way or the other...i just go. My brother on the other hand is a tremendous fisherman and thinks its bs. he figures the fish are somewhere and they will take his fly at some point. we argue about it all the time. nobody ever wins that one.
Sherpa, lines on the thingamabobber, thank you for the tip. Do you use a sharpie?
Frank, I'm beginning to realize that to fish a slow deep pool euro style we are limiting ourselves to a narrow drift track and are not presenting to many of the fish that are there. We can get down adequately but because of our positional limitations at these winter holding lies we are unable systematically cover enough of a grid so consequently most of that pool goes unfished. (Hey, sounds like I know what I'm talking about don't it?) I fished a spot Monday like this and took two fish. I will try it tomorrow with an indicator to see if there is any difference and let you guys know.
Also, Aaron mentioned suspending ones rig, I haven't tried that yet but that seems noteworthy too. I have watched him work his indicator in a variety of river situations and he slides that thing up and down on that leader like fingers on a guitar string. He is constantly manipulating and adjusting till he finds the right set up. At the next pool, he starts all over. I think that is where many of us miss the boat.
Aaron I think maybe an indicator lesson/guide trip should be comming down the pike soon![]()
Frankm
Yup a Sharpie is the deal.
Frank,
We can do that over my Christmas vacation. I have a couple trips for that week, but I am sure that we can schedule something. I am almost finished moving! I will shoot you an e mail tonight.
I've been using the "coil" indicators, and it is much easier to see the subtle hits and pauses in your line. I like the thingamabobbers for when i have to get "out there" a bit, but for shortlinig, I really like the coils.
