From what I gather its basically leading your fly without dragging it through the water. High stick it moving the tip of the rod with the current keeping the line just tight enough to feel a hit. I hope I've read it right...

    fshcrzy,

If you wait to feel the fish you will miss a stack of them, at times you will only see a very subtle twitch of the leader or sighter.

The essence of this style, also wet fly and soft hackle when dead drift methodsare used is to always be in touch with you flies so that any resistance caused by a fish is registered.

Learn to fish this way with one well weighted fly before you move on to 2 or 3.

    It does take practice.

Davy is right of course! If you wait till you "feel" the take you will miss a lot of fish. Like he said, watch your leader. It will twitch, stop or move in a strange manner. When it does, let the fish have it!

The wet fly and soft hackle takes a lot of skill as I am finding out over the last week. However, when its done right you can nail some big browns. It takes a high level of concentration to watch the butt section of you leader for takes. I am no where near as good as Davy is at it. He can detect the takes with wet flies and soft hackles before they even happen. He is that good!

Aaron, yes you are right l can do that and the main reason why is this.

Years of experience and catching fish by these methods. You develop a 6th sense that at given times a fish will take, in other words you are anticipating that the fish will take before it does, as you know exactly where the flies are at any given point in time and that is the time they will.

This is again one of the reasons why the Czechs and Poles are as good as they are.

Same also applies when shot gun shooting skeet, which was also one of my big time passions, you get that good at it you know where that bird will be at any time and can make the kill shot.

    OK to go further here.

Take a section of river. As you fish say a 100 yard section at the 20 yd mark, the 44 yd mark the 68 yd mark and the 91st make you hook a fish.
Repeat again and catch a fish in exactly the same place. Third time around you will anticipate the same scenario, this time your reaction time will be way faster, the more the same scenario the faster your reaction time.

It is exactly the same thing after years of experience fishing many different water systems, there comes a point in time that you know the odds are you will nail one.

You just know those flies are where they need to be and expect a fish to take.

    Davy.

It is funny guys that use indicator ask me how I can detect strikes without out them. After time you just seem to know. it becomes a 6th sense. You anticipate the strike like Davy says and when you can do that you know you are getting things down pat!
