Unions are the primary method of redistributing wealth . The big breakthroughs for working people in the U.S ( the forty hour work,week,child labor laws, minimum wage standards) and much more have been achieved by Unions. Union membership is up in the U.S for the second year in a row. The current economic mess we are in came from corporate greed. It was interesting that when the auto industry was in trouble the strongest attack was against the auto workers wages and benefits not excessive management compensation. I agree the Union movement has made mistakes but those pale in comparison to the concentrated attacks made by corporate America against the living standards of working people. Every working person in this country owes the union movement a debt for their standard of living . The unfettered market will deliver profits to the greedy few . The Unions are part of the solution not the problem.

The unions had their time and place; they are now simply legalized extortion and do little to create a quality workforce. (Corporate executives are even worse, but I'll save that for another day)

I have never wanted or needed to pay someone to fight for my job, negotiate my salary or benefits, and have only despised the protection offered to the lazy SOB's that really should be fired.

There is power in organization for sure, but all power has the potential to be abused and many unions have crossed that line a long time ago.

If you dont like your wages, working conditions, your personal treatment, or anything else for that matter, just leave, if you are willing to work, you'll find work.

Back to the topic; I really think that teachers (and especially administrators) need to be held personally accountable, but there also has to be a way of assessing the talent they are given at the beginning of the year. It is unlikely that a teacher in Bridgeport is going to get their class to perform as well as the same year class in Westport. Too many things going against the Bridgeport teacher; most importantly parental involvement. Lots of kids in school with parents that simply do not teach them to value an education; those kids are not likely going to work hard at this if their parents don't convince them it's worthwhile.
