I was in the Tully today from about 1-4. I caught only about 1 fish per hour, a lot of work for 3 fish. I did catch my largest of 2008, a 15" brown. I tried every nymph and bugger in my arsenal to no response. Finally I got some action on a caddis type of nymph that was tan with a rust thread head. I did see some little trout jump completely out of the water for these tiny tiny cream colored midges. Always learning and having a great time.

Were there many caddis hatching? I have seen large numbers of caddis hatching there during the early season? Is the water temp over 50 yet? If you go there again make sure to nymph the shallow riffles with bright green caddis larvae. They can't help themselves but to eat that color caddis.

Fished the Tully earlier that morning from 7-12. Did real well with sulphurs(fished wet), wd-40's, buggers and caddis pupae. All rainbows (and creek chubs and suckers) except for 2. Both browns took buggers. River was in great shape. Also hit Brodhead Creek for 2nd PA opening day. Fish were hammering any nymph or bugger.

Any advise would be appreciated. I did not see any caddis hatching, only the cream midges and a few sulphurs. What is a WD-40? What color buggers were you using?

I was at the confluence of Cacoosing. I watched a few guys around me. It seemed I did as well as anyone else, at the same time, I don't feel tremendously effective.

Sholgate: last fall the fly of the month on this site was the WD40. Go back and take a look.

I didn't see any caddis either. That spot at the Cacoosing is awesome, I drove by there and it was packed. I'm pretty sure I was fishing the Pallisades area. I moved to Philly area in fall so I am still trying to figure out all the spots. I was using white buggers. The WD-40 on the youtube video is very close to the one I was using except mine was done in black. I'm unsure what the fly is in the link you posted. I'm sure people here know what it is.

They work well in black as well. The WD 40 also does double duty as a midge as well. Its a great fly in that regard! When you fish the "Tully" rememeber one thing. The trout there get hammered and they move around and many times that means super skinny water. More often than not I get them in 6 to 12" inches of water. Most guys fish the likely holding water. I hit the secondary zones and do well.

PART II

I went tonight after teaching my tuba and trumpet lessons. I got in around 715PM. I started with a caddis again, but then the midge cloud hit me. (the cream ones again) I put on my line a WD-40 like fly that I tied last night. I used a pheasant for a tail, dark rust thread and a greenish dubbing. Anywho, although I did not land any fish... I never have had a more productive 1 hour on a stream ever. I think I was hooking up with rainbows only because they were coming out of the water os much. Missed 3 sizable fish. And had a great time. Always will take the advise given. - And thanks.

When you fish 6-12" of water nymphing, how do you set up your rig?
