    Ninemile Creek

Finally watched the gauge drop to a point where I couldn't take any more. Headed out after tying a few dozen and got on the water at about 11. Not many guys fishing...the high, glacier looking water was not too inviting I must say.

But...the fishing was excellent with a great mix of newly stocked 1 and 2 year-olds and some gorgeous wild fish. The high water has spread the fish well--good for me but bad for the normal opening day guys I guess. Had some spectators--but what's nice about the high water and rain is that I can pretend not to hear them--and after saying "Huh? Can't hear you" 5 times they wander off.

Off the water at 2. Lots of fish..far more than I anticipated. Some midges were hatching when I left...but I doubt the #2 pink condom fly was passing for a midge pupa--or anything else for that matter! No worries....all but 3 fish came to it so I wasn't complaining.

It'll only get better has the water warms and comes to life and all the dumb fish go home on stringers. The best fishing up here is in July and August when no one is ever on the water and the fish are my own personal toys .

Ahhh..glad to be done with steelhead!

    Hi Loren,
I've had a great time reading all of your posts. I'm usually on here more, but these past few weeks have been tough. I'm sure I'll start asking you lots of questions about your guiding up in Pulaski. Aaron introduced me to salmon and steelhead fishing this year, and I've taken a love to it.

You mentioned that you're done with the Steelhead. Do you usually stop fishing for them by April? I've heard a lot about fishing for the drop backs, but by then you're probably occupied with competing and trout guiding.

    Looking forward to reading onward,
    Dave

    Re: Ninemile Creek

    HI Dave,

Next week will be my last week guiding for steelhead (if the phone rings). I am just an old stick in the mud I guess and I prefer not to haunt the gravel with a zillion other guys.

Dropbacks can be great fun for sure, but my services have never been in demand for that season-probably because by then fly fishing for trout is going full bore.
