Has anyone seen any BWO's lately? I haven't due to the temps and nasty weather we had been getting past couple days. Looks like tomorrow might be a good time to fish since it is going to be in the late 40's and sunny. Well I will keep you guys updated if I see any tomorrow.
Alain and I saw some on Spring Creek 2 weeks ago. I would think the the limestone streams are going pretty good right now. I would venture to say that the colder freestone streams are slightly behind. However, with all that being said I am not there so this is not 100 percent accurate. But the hatch usually builds quick so I am about 99.9 percent sure they are hatching now!

On the freestones I haven't seen a BWO at all. I think b/c of the low temps. according to my records and I am perdicting that they should start hatching in the late 40's or early 50's since this is going to be the highest temp in past couple weeks due to my recording and tomorrow is going to be late 40's early 50's for the freestones. My friends at the FFP haven't seen a lot of BWO's on the limestones but that was a week ago.
Friday fish were rising everywhere on Spring Creek. I couldn't tell what they where feeding on with the 30mph winds and blowing snow. BWO's are here, thats for sure. Give it some time, they always show up in small numbers early then build as March progresses. The cold temps we have been experiencing will certainly push back the BWO's. It's the same thing every year midges start to show themselves pretty heavily then 2 weeks later the BWO's are here in full force. The midges are here in good numbers recently, so be patient, as soon as winter loosens its grip the BWO's will follow.
My advice--don't rush it, everyone anticipates them as soon as it is March. Almost always the largest part of the hatch is in mid March, and sometimes even the 3rd week of March.
I was out today for a few hours this afternoon. Only saw a couple olives. Fish were really working midges well around 1pm. First 2 casts with a #22 griffiths gnat and bam missed one and landed the next one. A few casts later I gotta little to excited and set the hook with to much beef and lost the fly. I went to get another one from my box....to my suprise my midge box is not with me, but is laying on my tying desk at home....DOH!!!! Oh well there will always be next time.
