Thread: Spring Creek

    Spring Creek

I had a chance to hit up Spring Creek on Sunday with my friend Jason at the Benner Springs and Paradise sections. We had a great time. We both caught bows over 20 inches as well as several nice wild browns. Sucker spawn and cress bug patterns in size 16 took the biggest fish. It was freezing in the morning, but the day warmed up to almost 40 in the afternoon. The creek was awesome to see early in the morning with steam rising off it because of the cold air temperatures. See pictures below.

You were not kidding when you said you had some nice fish to show off! In the words of Borat... very nice... I like! High five!

    Re: Spring Creek

The first rainbow was caught on a cream colored sucker spawn tied with red thread. The second rainbow was caught on a grey cress bug pattern tied with muskrat fur. Both were size 16, TMC 2487. The first rainbow fought like a champion, taking me about 50 yards down stream. The second rainbow with the big head didn't put up too much of a fight.

I got the big brown trout last week in the same spot that the second rainbow was caught out of. It's strange there are not many big fish in there and two came out of the same spot.

Did you seen many suckers starting to group up in the riffles?

Were the BWOs out in force?

    Re: Spring Creek

Yea, there's a nice liitle hole about 100 yards downstream from the old bridge at the Benner Fish Hatchery. I've caught some small wild browns out of the hole, but the rainbow Jason pulled out was the biggest I've seen. The hole holds a ton of fish. The rainbow was actually sitting a little above the hole in some riffles on the far bank. I have yet to pull a monster brown out of Spring Creek.

To be honest, I didn't see too many suckers at all. I caught two fat ones last week, but didn't see any this week. I've only been fly fishing for about a year, so I'm not up on all the lingo yet. Luckily my friend Jason guided out West for a few years and runs a chapter of Family Tyes at the high school he teaches at, so I've picked up quite a bit from him. What is BWO?

    BWO- blue winged olives

If you plan on fishing there again in the next month or so do not be caught without a bunch of them in nymphs, emergers and dries. In my experience the best hatches occur mid day on warmer overcast days.

    The big browns are there.....

Oh by the way I think I may have seen that rainbow in the second pic before....look familiar?

Looks like that monster rainbow is making the rounds. Thanks for the info on the BWOs. What sizes normally work best for you on Spring Creek?

    Re: Spring Creek

Heres a general idea of what I carry for BWO's

    dries-#18-22
    emergers-RS2's & wd-40's in #18-22
nymph- PT's and olive copper johns #16-20

There are plenty of other patterns that will work, but I try to keep it fairly simple and stick to the basics.
