    Summertime brookies

With the summer in full swing and the water really heating up I think it's time to move onto the mountain streams for some brookies. The only problem is that I have never done it, nor do I even know where to go. So anybody near the Altoona area that would be willing to give me some decent places to go I would greatly appreciate it. I would even enjoy
Places that I would need to hike to. Also, being that I have never tried this before does anybody have any pointers for mountain brookie fishing? Flies, tippet? Thanks guys.

Stealth is the key. Wild mountain brookies will take most well presented flies. I've taken very small wild brookies on massive stoneflies, and caddis. As far as tippet just bring a selection of knot less leaders in nylon, and a small rod.

Halliday said it, stealth is the key. Brookies are not very bright, but they are extremely wary. Splashing around in a brook trout stream you will think there are no fish in it. I try to stay on the bank crossing only when one side is easier than the other to fish from. One thing though, I use small flies because like mentioned above, they will hit anything and because of their size its pretty easy to poke their eye out with a big fly.

Many guys like to use short rods for tight quarters but I use my 10ft'er everywhere. While you can't do alot of casting with it, its great for reaching over obstructions and dapping flies over small pools. Some streams are so tight that you can't cast a 6ft'er anyway so you may as well be able to reach with a long one.

Do a little research for streams around you. I wont speak for other guys, but I hold my mountain stream locations close to me. They are small and fragile and can't take alot of pressure. Good luck, CJ

Kelso, you need to get a DeLorme Gazateer for PA and go exploring! That book, and the Internet is all you need.
