    KLG - 6/7 trip report

So the Gorge has been my
Nemesis. I've never had great luck there, just one or two fish days. One of my buddies wanted to to go so I said sure.

I did a lot of prospecting. Just when I thought it was going to be tough going, I remembered what I learned found some nice pocket water and and started making text book casts.

Just like that, I was on the fish! I caught 4 and lost one, making for my best day ever at the gorge. Nice for only a couple of hours after work.

Bonus, I caught my first ever Brook Trout. Polish woven nymphs were the ticket today.

Thanks AJ I think it's starting to sink in.

    Hi BC,

I'm glad the day turned around for you and you had a good day, you did the right thing and stuck it out and went back to basics! I've had some great days at the Gorge and some that I wondered if the trout gods were punishing me for something.

I have to say that most of my bad days were during low water and late in the season the fishing was just plain tough. I also spent many nights fishing the big hole trying to catch those fish rising just off the far bank and being rewarded by a chub taking my fly before a trout could reach it.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1339190024.424321.jpg

If you keep going you'll put the puzzle together a little bit at a time and before long your good days will outnumber the bad. The only advice I would pass on is watch those guys nymph fishing who are consistently successful they are the ones who have solved the puzzle.

    Good Fishing, Roger

The gorge is a pocket water dream. From the lower lot any 100' run of river has a million aspects to it. If it rains, everything changes. If it is dry for a week it is a whole different river. There are so many seems it is almost infinite in its possibilities and yet you always know where you are going to pick off a few. Change sides and fish lanes you usually don't and be surprised where you catch fish. I really like the tight freestone pocket water available there. It's the most fun you can have with a fly rod. You could line up at the south gate and make 1000 casts up stream and only be 1000 feet upstream when you are done. plus, the tight aspect of the river helps improve your aim with your flies.

Thanks Halliday. I was pretty stoked. Not to mention I took him out of a nice pool that a couple of jersey shore types almost high holed me on. I was just finished working the tail out when I had a tangle. As I'm re-rigging to start working the pool here comes paulie scurrying down to the pool. But something didn't look right to him so he went back up the bank and farther up stream. I don't think he was being courteous because that was like the third time he would have high holed me. So I jumped in the pool and started working it and caught him. I hope paulie was watching.

If people do that it is because they are ignorant. I usually just fish through them to prove my point and if they say something I reply with "oh, I didn't even see you there". Don't make eye contact, just keep pushing. I'll gladly move around some old timers out of courtesy. Keep it friendly with the regulars (hey, that's me) don't litter, and don't park like a jack a**. I'd say the litter pisses me off more than anything. On any river.
