    Ice Fishing

Taylor and I headed out to Pennsylvania with some high hopes... They were quickly dashed when we arrived to the stream and it was frozen. I must admit that I was excited because it would be dual challenge. The first was to find fishable water and the second was to actually catch something. We both were rigged up to fish European Nymphing methods. I didn't find any open water in the first half mile of stream, then it happened, some open water! I took my first fish from behind a huge chunk of ice that was breaking the current and providing a new holding lie for the fish. It was a small wild brown of about 12 inches, beggers can't be choosers when the conditions are terrible. The fishing was so so with the exception that I caught the largest fish that I have caught to date from this stream. I actually took him from out under an ice shelf. I could not believe that such a large fish was in such shallow water. I would imagine that his usual holding lie was frozen!

Stonefly and caddis fly larva were the top producers. The smaller micro nymphs did not work so well. I guess that they were looking for a "real" meal!

Hard core for sure! I drove by my nice streaam today during work and it wasn't frozen as it is a tail water, but there is no parking due to the huge snow mounds . Guess I'll be hiking !
