tan caddis & brookie stream

I finally had time to go and christen my brookie outfit {greys 6'6" 4wt.} I received on father's day. Yesterday was a mild day - mid to low 70's in Northcentral CT. I know the farmington river is still low so I headed out to do some scouting for hunting season and dip a few flies in a nice looking brookie stream nearby. I took my son with me to do the hiking, scouting and hopefully a little fishing if the water was in good condition.

Many squirrels were browsing the ground or trapezing through the trees. Acorns were plentiful. Seen some nice deer trails and deer droppings. Stream was a little low, but, there were some good holding spots in cutaway banks or plunge pools that I remembered. Water Temperature was 59 degrees, nice and cold water. I started out with the trusty tan caddis. First two pools with a cutaway bank and some rocks in the stream provided some hiding spots. My son and I spooked the fish though. I then remembered the stealth part.

We then moved to a larger plunge pool. Dropped the fly in the water just above the plunge and watched it go over the rapids into the pool. Little brookie came out of no where and slammed the fly. Missed that one too much slack in the line. Second cast same spot yielded another brookie slamming the fly. This time I had less slack and was able to hook'em. Nice 6" brookie released. I handed my rod over to my son who was observing what I was doing. He dropped the fly above the rapids and watched the fly go over and another brookie slammed the fly, but, he had too much slack in the line missed. He was all excited. I told him to try again. He did and hooked one temporarily but it got off. He tried again same pool, no takers. Pool was spooked. Time to move on.

Followed the stream around a few bends until some nice rapids went under a little cutaway bank. I said to my son, I think some fish will be holding up under the cutaway bank. Dropped the fly above the rapids and let the fly drift until it headed for the bank. The fly was six inches from the bank when a brookie darted out to the fly. Hooked this one and release him. A 7" brookie nice markings. I let my son try the pool this time. He made the first cast above the rapids but it ended up too far away from the bank. Second cast was better, the fly drifted very similar path I caught one. Sure enough, just as the fly just about 3 inches from the bank a brookie darted out and slammed the fly. My son momentarily hooked it, but it jumped out of the water twice then threw the hook back at us.

The fish were spooked in that pool with all that commotion. My son and I followed the stream a little ways but did not see too may holes that interested us so we headed back to the car.

A great day for father & son. Hopefully more to come.
