The Lost World of Mr. Hardy

I watched the DVD titled, "The Lost World of Mr. Hardy." The history lesson on this DVD is amazing. One has to watch it to truly appreciate the evolution of our great sport.

Here are a few highlights and tidbits of info!

Hardy made special salmon outfit for princess Diana!

9" centerpin reel sold for 5,200 pounds.

Products have lasted over 100 years.

Huge Hardy store in London, like Orvis in Manchester. 8 employees or assistants as they would call them. People had them as their personal fly fishing advisors.

The company went into official business in 1873! Foster Hardy came in and developed the Perfect. The first fly reel with ball bearings! The Perfect also pioneered a drag system. They even brought this back dye to popularity.

Some of the reels that belonged to Wiiliam Hardy were made special. One went for 13,500 pounds.

The bamboo rod making segment is extremely interesting. The Annick Method. The US started this using Chinese Bamboo. I never knew that. Hardy purchased the rod, took it apart and learned how to make them! So the US actually started bamboo fly rods. So they had the Perfect reel and now the perfect reel. They had a casting comp and Hardy rods outproduced all other rods. They also invented the planing machine for split cane rods.


The quality control was outstanding. If a reel was messed up they would smash them. If a rod was not perfect it would be broken.

The Casting Club de France asked Hardy to create a small stream rod. The rod was a 7 foot 3 weight split cane rod.

The finishing and workmanship on their early rods was second to none. They always had the best designers. They were aggressive.

Their gear was always a spectacle. John James always showed it off on Atlantic Salmon trips.

They were so cocky that they sent out catalogs in the 1920's with pre paid envelopes to send orders in.

The amount if money that they made in the beginning was amazing. The house they lived in and the factory in Alnwick were spectacular.

The River Aaro was epic. They were hammering salmon. Some were 60-70 pounds. They would hook them and have someone else land them so they would not get their shoes wet! The salmon were huge and plentiful. I hated to watch them kill the fish though. They started fly fishing cinemetography in the 1930's with these Atlantic Salmon.

They had a reel with a real brake on them for tuna and marlin! The reel was as big as your head...

The end of the video gets sad as the stores close and they closed the large factory and moved. The company almost went bankrupt and moved. Coarse fishing saved that company from going into the tank. The brought on a man with the last name of Walker who was a famous carp fisherman and he designed rods.

What a pretty area. All the greenery is amazing.
