Nail Knot Splice for Leader Construction

Are you aware of the nail knot splice?

There have been a few questions about knots on the forum this past year, so I thought I should bring it up. The knot is especially useful when joining hard material leader sections that differ in diameter by more than about 0.006in. If it helps anyone, I can post a few pictures of the technique, let me know. With the Tie-Fast tool, it's quite simple and makes a clean, smooth knot (even with Maxima Chameleon) that whizzes through the guides on your fly rod. I hope this is helpful.

One additional suggestion for any knot,,,,,apply a thin coating of Loon Knot-Sense and hit it with the UV flashlight,,,extra smooth through the guides.

Any knot will hold "until it begins to slip", this is why Zap-A-Gap was developed for FF and Loon Products introduced Knot-Sense.

Zap-A-Gap was developed as a water proof "Krazy Glue" by a West Coast FF who was also a chemist,,,,,He would tie up knotted leaders with a simple overhand knot and glue them solidly. (this was via Bill Hunter owner of Hunter's Angling Supply).

    Regards,
    FK

So Alain, what you are calling a Nail Knot Splice is actually 2 back-to-back Nail Knots butted up against each other, correct?

    Everyone:
    Thanks for your helpful comments!

    john:
That's an excellent site, but I find it hard to follow the animations. I am slow to learn knots.

Here you go. Hope this is helpful.

    Nymphmeister:
I am learning too, so I probably have the nomenclature wrong. I saw the name "Nail Knot Splice" printed here http://www.tie-fast.com/2007%20Video%20Form.htm as a means for building tapered leaders. Back-to-back nail knot is much more descriptive. I find it hard to tie good knots in the thick butt sections of leaders, so I started using this knot a while ago. It's my go to knot on my short streamer leaders.
