Grade my pheasant tail

I've been tying for about 5 years. I just finished cutting off some flies I tied that did not look so good. If they don't look good I will not fish them.
I would also recomend Charlie Craven's book and site for fly tying instruction. Proportions are everything and Charlie is a stickler for where everthing should go on the hook and how much to use.
Save that fly and look at it next year. You will be amazed at how good you've become.

I'm a newbie tyer too. Some of the basics technique things I picked up by going to a fly tying night. Just park your butt next to a seasoned tyer and ask questions. Ironically the first fly I learned was a PT.

I've been tying a long time but can still remember the turning points. The main ones were attending a flytying club, watch and ask question. Maybe ask for a fly to copy.
I was also lucky to go to flytying days organised by partridge, being able to watch and learn from some well known tyers was a big help.

The main thing is practice. Proportions on a fly isn't something learnt over night. Took me a while.

Maybe a lesson over skype?

Some of my best fish catchers have been flies that are, for lack of a better word, ugly. Nothing in nature is perfect and I think that any fly that stands out from the crowd so to speak will work. Just my humble opinion.

Your fly will catch fish as it is but as time goes on you will get better. Try YouTube, honestly it is a huge fly tying resource. If you download a program called Get Tube you can put them on your computer and watch them without continually searching them out. The original PT nymph by Frank Sawyer was tied with pheasant tail and copper wire, that is it. The premise of the pattern has not changed and the original pattern still catches fish. I like Charlies Fly Box too. I tye a version with peacocks herl for the thorax. I tie it in from the bottom. Then I stand all the fibers up by running my fingers against the grain. I then wrap the heart tightly with the rotary function, with no overlap. Makes an eye popping thorax.
