    Tiny little black bugs....

Ok, so last year in May (I think, Juice correct me if I'm wrong), Justin and I were at the KLG and the rocks were covered in these small black bugs with mottled wings, that jumped and hopped around, but didnt really fly much. they were almost spade shaped, like an upside down spade, much like a shield bug or stink bug. We could not figure out what they were. the wings laid flat on the back... they didnt tent like caddis or stand upright like a mayfly. I think we were in agreement that the critters didn't look like they fell into the big three insects category. Any thoughts? I will be sure to get pictures this summer.

Definitely not stones... no real antennae and bulky not slender like a stone. I don't think they were black flies either: they didnt bite, they didn't really fly much, and they looked nothing like a house fly. looked mostly like a stink or shield bug. kinda liek this:

If it looked like that link you posted, I don't think it was an aquatic insect at all but rather some sort of beetle or similar terrestrial insect.
