Housy- Labor Day weekend

In short, the Housy is cooling down fast- 65 degrees this morning, measured in the Catch & Release (TMA) area on a very accurate infrared thermometer. Northeast Generating is reporting much higher temps on their recordings, I believe they take it in the surface of the slack water above the dam, which would explain why their reading are so much higher than the actual temps in the TMA. A friend/customer was out tonight and as of 7PM, had picked up a half dozen nice browns and one obese 18" rainbow that he said was the fattest freshwater fish he's ever caught- good to know the fish are in nice shape. Said it fought really hard & jumped, and it immediately squirted out of his hands on the release. He was nymphing when I bumped into him. What a difference a day or two makes- 2 nights prior in the same spot, he was targetting and catching virtually all bass due to much warmer water temps. Lows in the 40's tonight should drop the AM water temps down closer to 60- just about the ideal temp for trout. Keep an eye on temps though, I saw 2 or 3 days in the long range where it was supposed to hit the low to mid 80's- with the flow so low know, the temps both jumps up rapidly on a warm, sunny day and drops quickly during a cold night. We could really use some rain-it would help spread the fish out, make it easier for them to elude the herons, and help the temps keep from jumping all over the place. Hatches include small Olives, Flying Ants, Isonychia, a couple of different Caddis, Fall Sulfurs, Midges and Summer Stenos/Cahills. Evenings are seeing the most bugs overall, but morning are seeing the best water temps. If it gets hot again, I recommend trout fishing earlier in the day and leave them alone when the water temps go up later in the day. Bass are still very active and I recommend fishing for them on hotter days and giving the trout a break. As long as the water temps are okay, you can target the trout with a clean conscience. Just to be on the extra safe side, go no lighter than 5x on the trout, and play them hard and land them quickly, making sure not to take them out of the water for more than a few seconds- preferably not at all. I'm looking forward to a good Fall.
