Anybody out there have any scoop on the carmans on Long Island?
Out of the three rivers in Suffolk county, Carmans is the only free one as long as you have a NY state fishing license. The other two Nissequogue and Connetquot charge $15 per 3-4 hours for a section or beat that would consist of 3-4 holes. The headwaters of the Carmans river is better for trout for as the river meanders east and south then becomes a warm species haven bass, perch, bluegills as well as some salt water species.
Out of the three for fly fishing, Connetquot would be the better bet. Nissequogue is small river 6-10ft wide that is good for dipping for trout.
I could count on my two hands the number of times I fished all three rivers. Realize that I lived in Central PA during part of my formidable years prior and I have my prejudice of fishing great waters like Penns, Elk, Big Pine, Big Fishing, and Loyalsock creeks that are free to fish and not have to pay $15 for 3-4 hours to fish 3-4 holes. I opted to head back to Central PA or head up to Sullivan County NY to fish even when I lived a stones throw away from the Nissequogue in Smithtown.
Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.
~Henry David Thoreau
Eh probablly charge to keep the place from being run down by people that'd otherwise abuse it...I think it's ridiculous to charge people to simply just fish on a river like that, but assuming that's why it's done I guess I can understand the logic behind it

I have done the connequot a few times but was hoping the Carmans was more challenging, more solitude. What about the Brookie population? Any truth to the Brookie situation on carmans. It looks like a beautiful stream. Connequot is absolutely breathtaking I think. its just so darn over stocked, the fish practially fight each other for your fly. I was fishing to a nice fish on the conn a few years ago and an osprey crashed outa nowhere and snagged the fish and chowed it right in front of me, just tore it apart and ate it twenty feet in front of me as if I wasn't there. Really couldn't believe it, cool. That place is very unique. A spring creek w osprey and seagulls flying around. its like a hybrid landscape, feels so unique. The stones and sand are dyed reddish from tanin from the ceder forest. never scene anything like it. worth the trip just for the scenery. But the fishing is so easy its a joke. However the upper water near the source is quite difficult and challenging w some selective monsters, but I am not sure if you are allowed up there.
Scouted two miles of Carmans headwater saturday w/o my rod. Out of respect to the hard working people of the Art Flick chapter I won't say much other than that place is beautiful. Not one peace of litter on the ground, total solitude, absolutely prestine crystal clear water w bright green vegitation. If your lookin to catch tons of huge stocked fish stay clear of this place. Hit the connequot instead. very much like the letort in that it appears to be absolutely impossible to fish, impossible to access and impossible to approach. also deer tick central (pulled six off my legs). This place could def ruin a day of fishing. Any Art Flickers that feel comfy sharing a little hatch scoop get in touch I will kindly pay for coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the $2 fee.
Really want to check this place out...how's it fish in the fall?...anyone been there at all lately? Is it all wild fish? how tight are the fishing quarters? and anything else worth adding
