Westfield River system Update....the week of 5/17

    Well, well,
I ventured back to my old favorite the Westfield with a good friend of mine. It was his first Hiatus to the river, and it was a good time for both. The trip back up there reminded me how much fun I had on the banks of that watershed as a kid. The trip was a multi-tasked affair, we needed to collect some bugs for my friends new project/book he is working on about caddis flies, and also capture some photographs while intermingling some fishing time as well. WE concentrated our efforts on the upper 3 branches of the river, the areas that I frequented as a kid. They all produced fish, some more than others, and one particular section of one branch seems to have been severely scoured by the april noreaster....lets say void of insect life all together. Troubling, but hopefully she will bounce back. The refreshing part is, in the upper most portion of this one particular section (east branch management area) the insect life is fine and a vast array of insects were present and hatching.

The fishing was fair to stellar, the last outing was fantastic, I believe I netted a sound 2 dozen rainbows, and the even better part was a new pattern came into its own for me and I am really stoked about it. The message here is, if you live near the watershed, or are dying to fish it, get up there soon the window is open and the fishing is rather good. Concentrate your efforts on the fast pocket water and you will be greatly rewarded. Good luck....

    Rich,
I will be camping & fishing the @ the Indian Hollow Camp ground this weekend.
Are you familiar with the area? What would you have in your fly box?
    Do you have any suggestions?

Large cased caddis, upto a size 6 , 3x long. Bring lots of them. Stones, pheasant tails, in various sizes 12-18s, you might see some sulphurs, bring some olive caddis larva in a 12-16. Have some size 18-12 rusty spinners for the evening, along with some sulphur duns in a 16-14, parachutes or snowshoe emergers will work. You may even see a drake or two. My suggestion to you is, hike upstream of the camp ground and fish from there up to the Chesterfield gorge. When I was there a week ago the river is void of insect life from the campground downstream to the dam from that last noreaster. If they stocked it however, the fish will eat anything. Good luck.
