    Thanksgiving Salmon river report

My trip this weekend to the Salmon river was a very good one at least for my skill level any way. I started fihing at about noon on thanksgiving day. I hooked 5 steelhead and landed one. It was raining at first and then started to snow for the rest of the day. Friday was in the low to mid 20's and snow fluries all day. I hooked 10 steehead and landed 5. Saterday the temp in the morning was 12 deg. and partly clowdy I hooked 10 steelhead and landed 4. Sunday was like a heat wave 32 deg. in the am I only fished a couple of hours but hooked 5 steelhead and landed 1. All in all it was a very good trip for me. Believe it or not I hooked more fish than any one esle in the same section of the river I was fishing in.[img][/img]

FlyDad, great report, that sounds like an AWESOME trip! Another great way to spend Thanksgiving! ;D
Great to hear that you kept up the TPO way of doing things, again. I'd love to see some pics when you get a chance.

Those temps are really getting down there. Were there many other anglers on the SR? Were you above, below? Any particular flies that did the trick over others?

Again, sounds like an incredible Thanksgivings, thanks for the report.

Good job on the SR. I really wish you would have come with us to fish for the brown trout! The fishing in the SR will pick up in Dec. This is when I think the most fish come into the river!

Im having trouble figuring out how to post a pic. if any one can tell me how to post one let me know Im not good with that type of thing. ???

I was using egg paterns it didnt realy make a lot of difference. I hooked fish on just about every color I tried but I think pink was the best along with chartreuse & blue. I think the biggest part of my success was being able to detect the strike. Thank god for my Sage XP 10 FT 8 WT I could feel every little thing that touched my line. I tried dead drifting but didnt realy have good luck untill I started swinging them. AND NO NONE OF THEM WERE LINED. Every fish that I landed were hooked in the roof of the mouth Just behind there teeth

Aaron. I feel bad that I passed up the chance to come fish with you. I was having good success on the SR so I decided just to stay there. Thanks again for the invite. Maybe I will get luckey and you will give me a raincheck.

Interesting that dead drifting didn't work well. Wonder if fishing & swinging them on a tight line just gave you better strike detection, or maybe they just wanted it moving. I take it you started with an indicator and then moved to high sticking or switched to a running line? Over the years, I've caught most of my Salmon River Steelhead with a running line. I do find myself doing a lot more indicator nymphing though- it's a truer dead drift. Just tough to do when it's well below freezing, I'd rather use a running line then or switch to my Centerpin & float rig. Sounds like you had a good trip though, congrats. The Salmon River is a stream that can humble you on any given day.

I dont realy know why the swing worked better. Sunday morning a guy beat me to the spot that I wanted to fish. He was using a centerpin float setup I even told him exactly were the fish were and and were he should be picking them up. He fished that spot for about 2 hours and gave up. He asked me if I wanted to move into the spot and of course I said yes. before he could get all the way out of the river I hooked a fish in that same spot. I think he didnt like that very much. Oh buy the way saturday morning when it was 12 deg out I hooked and landed the first fish of the day on my first cast . and I hooked and landed my last fish of the day at 5:00 pm on my last cast of the day.
