    Ice Dubbing

Has anyone tried using Ice Dubbing as a hare/antron dubbing replacement on their nymphs? I've been tying a few prototype Hare's Ears and cased caddis and they look nice to me, but I am wondering if the fish will agree. Any comments? Nymphmeister?

    Re: Ice Dubbing

I don't generally use ice dubbing by its self. I usually mix a little with the main dubbing that I am going to use for my nymphs. I think that this adds an awesome trigger to my fly and gets me a few fish that would not take the nymph with the usual dubbing.

    Re: Ice Dubbing

I attended the HRO fly tying session, Winter Nymphs with Torrey, last Saturday,,,,,I was the only FF who showed up......Harrold said that Torrey was my personal trainer for the morning.

Now whoever stated that "You cannot teach an old dog new tricks" was very incorrect. I have been FF longer than most and continue to enjoy learing new techniques and concepts.

One element I came away with is the appreciation of custom mixing your dubbing for nymphs, natural fur + some antron + some Ice Dubbing makes a very impressive looking body on any nymph. Torrey showed me some Hares Ear with blends that was far superior to the commercial bags of mixed dubbing.

    The stuff is really great.

I have been tying my Prince nymphs with rabbit-synthetic blends for several years now, and I like the ice dubbing for those better than lite brite and the stuff I was using before.

I have used the ID straight or mixed with rabbit, possum... it is much easier to work with when blended but still looks great (and fishes well) all by itself.

Yeah, I agree. I use it by itself and will use it mixed with other dubbing. I like the peacock and olive peacock for cased caddis by iteself with bright caddis green for the head. Great cased caddis fly. www.firsthatchflyfishing.com

    Re: Ice Dubbing

Everybody that ties with & fishes the stuff loves it. I mostly blend it sparingly with drabber dubbing, usually fur of some sort, but I've seen some very effective trout flies tied almost entirely out of the stuff. Seems like all my friends have independently come up with an effective cased caddis pattern using the stuff- I use it in that pattern too! Doug Swisher does some cool dubbings with micro rubber legs blended in- I tied a really nice cased caddis incorporating that for the case. The stuff I really liked in that was called Peacock Plus. His website is DougSwisher.com- check it out, he's got some really cool stuff and fly ideas on there.

    Re: Ice Dubbing

I just tied up some caddis pupa using some new colors of ice dubbing. Tan UV, Golden Brown, and a nice dark orange. I also blended hares ear with the tan UV, what a sweet fly that is. The UV is awesome. Even when I shut my tying lamp off, you can see the flash in the fly. I have another combo I am doing up for a cased caddis. Something a little lighter than the one I tie with the peacock ID.
