Nymphing the Delaware system

Alhtough known as the "dry fly" capital of the East there are times when the Del has no hatches and you have to go deep. Anybody care to share their experiences? Personally I have found soft hackles to be my #1 subsurface fly by far!!

You mean "no hatches" you can see on the surface. There is always food underneath. Many of us here have successfully nymphed the Delaware, but none so successfully as our founder Aaron. Given the super extended sulphur hatch on the West Branch, those types of nymphs are a good place to start.

I don't know where to begin with this one!

The Delaware can be the easiest river I have ever fished and the most fickle.

Sometimes the fish can be in the skinniest water in huge numbers and you whack the crap out of them one day to come back the next day and only catch a few under the same conditions.

Persistence and experience in fishing there under many different conditions is what makes you successful there. I have seen many good fishermen go there and get skunked or only catch a few when on their home river they score very well. Those fish move around a lot. By move around I don't just mean riffle to pool for a hatch but they move up and down the river as well.

Knowing where the fish will be under varying conditions is key. The only way to learn this is by going there over and over again. I used to fish that river in the neighborhood of 50 plus times a year. I can't tell someone to take X fly and go to X riffle and catch fish there.

Different flows make different sections fishable and un-fishable. Also, don't get stuck going to the same locations. This is due to movement of fish.

For fly patterns I do best on imitative flies. I have not been very successful on impressionistic flies there. Albeit, I have not fished them as frequently as I do the more imitative patterns.

As for techniques, This past Tuesday long leader Euro techniques worked well on the lower river. However, when I fished the upper river it was not as productive due to all of the weeds. Dry Dropper was the best for me and Justin did very well with strike indicator techniques. He picked up much less muck and caught a good amount of fish. I should have fished in that manner.

Bottom line put lots of time in under many varying flows and you will catch lots of fish there.
