    TULLY 6/3/08

I am finally getting over my fear of the bigger stream. I went to the Tully after school last night to confront it. I got in around 600PM and put on a size 18 green caddis and a bright red brassie. I parked under the bypass and there were 5 others already there, hovering over the pools I got in beside the first riffle and casted a little short of my goal, on the second cast I landed a 16" rainbow. I hooked up with 6 fish, landed 2. Much better action than in the past. But here is my query....

Why do I lose so many larger fish?

Because too small of a nymph?
    Not setting hard enough?
    Not keeping tight lines?
    Is it normal?

    Your input is appreciated.

Hard to tell. I tend to feel it's easier to land large fish than small ones.

It could be the hook itself, not the size. It could be the hook set. It could be line management. Lost fish are normally operator error.

I sometimes have the problem where I seem to lose the larger fish and I think it is definitely line management. I think I have too much give when I'm fighting the fish because I get excited and don't want the tippet to break. Giving with the rod causes momentary slack and pop goes the hook. Angler error!

How did the red brassie do? I have had success using a red disco midge.

A momentary pause in line tension .... That maybe my issue. Early on I lost some bigger ones due to 4 lbs tippet. So I learned to play a bit before landing, maybe I am swinging a little too hard to other side of the spectrum.

If your not doing it, try setting the hook downstream. I. I don't know if this is the problem but an upstream hook set will tend to pull the fly out of the fishes mouth, causing a bad hookset.

Not all, but most of my nymph fishing is up stream or cross stream. I am generally leading the bugs with the current so that almost all of my sets are down stream. I may play a fish for 10-20 seconds, if it is a bow it may jump once or twice and then ... then nothing. I still have my nymphs, but could not seal the deal.
