Scrubbing Boots

I just watched your little Video re: Maryland Washing Station. You mentioned a "salt" as the disinfecting medium. I have been using a 2% Chlorox solution for a while now---it's a PITA to deal with and can bleach out colors after extended use. If you know the "salt" that is used---speaking as a Chemist NaCl is "salt", but there on many other possibilities per se.

Dr. BDun - do you bring a bin (big enough to step into) of solution with you when you go fishing? Do you rinse off with clean water afterward, or is 2% solution of bleach/water not something you should be worried about with regard to the bleach deteriorating your waders? How long should a thorough scrubbing last?

Seems to me that aquastealth type wading shoes and the dilute bleach solution is the way to go.

If I know I'm going to be fishing multiple water sheds I will have a plastic tub large enough to step in, with 5% detergent or nappy cleaner and fresh water to rinse. You can also freeze your gear. There are several other ways if you want more info go to www.gmtrout.com then scroll down to don't spread didymo. Didymo and othe invasive spcies are spreading accross the world at an alarming rate. We need to be cleaning our gear. Here in Vermont Didymo has spread to the White River, Battinkill and the Mad River.

In response to Brookie, I do carry a foot bath---enough to put one shoe at a time. I generally will do the treatment at home before I go to the fishing site. However, when I am "on the road" the equipment comes with me so that I can clean if I am visiting more than one site. As for Aqua Stealth, as of yet it doesn't have a good following as indicated , with studs there are leak problems---yes the Vibram based soles appear to be better. Little by little state's are adopting regulations regarding wading shoes & felt bottoms. As usual NYS is always lagging behind with the Gubernatorial appointed hacks in charge of NYSDEC and their (in)famous heads up their proverbial arses. The tree huggers [ expletive deleted] are still clicking their tongues and lolling their heads in synchro merely repeating the literature of the NH F&G, with no positive action. The local Connetquot State Park has regulations now allowing only hip boots with rubber soles in the lower beats below the hatchery as their "solution."---argh! 8)

I bought my wading shoes at LL Bean. They have a rubber sole, not sure what kind but its basically the same type from which they make rock climbing shoes. I used them extensively last fall and they gripped the bottom like a vacumn. The soles are very soft, they do not make a lot of noise on the bottom, and they are obviously much easier to clean. The salesman at Bean (Saucoun Twp PA) said they went to this sole exclusively because of the didymo problem.

In order to be effective, 100% of fishermen need to clean (decontaminate) 100% of their contaminated gear.

This means that everyone that fishes across the world must thoroughly disinfect everything that comes in contact with infected waters.

Thorough treatment of flies, indicators, used split shot, lines, reels, rods, boots, waders, laces... by everyone must be performed when accessing multiple waterways.

I have NO hope that we can prevent the spread of invasive species.

Even as well-meaning individuals, stepping in a bucket of disinfectant without removing your boots and thoroughly washing the insides is ineffective. Also, if you do not actively flush your laces (forcing the disinfecting liquid through the inner core of the laces) and gusset materials, washing is ineffective. If you do all this, you are truly one among very very few; good luck.

What will happen when our local streams are infested with Didymo?

Biodiversity will be altered.

Some species will enjoy the effects.

Some species will perish.

The state(s) will continue to stock trouts.

Didymo might choke out the tubifex worm?? Who knows? Maybe they've already looked at this.

Some clever "environmentally concious" individual(s) might find a "beneficially invasive" species to challenge Didymo.

The world will turn.

Interesting what you say about some species suffering while others benefitting. This brings to mind the gobie invasion of the Great Lakes. While scientists worried about the impact on the ecosystem of the lakes, the fish have become a major food source for the smallmouth bass, walleye, and lake trout populations. Nature has a way of balancing out, sometimes for good, but also sometimes for the bad.
