Farmington 2009 Oct. 4

After a busy week with lots of driving, I had a couple hours for the Farmington this afternoon. Here's a quick symmary. Still late summer conditions, low clear water, only a small leaf hatch so far, but they are ready to go soon! Fishing was good, water temp was 62deg. I caught only browns today, trout-wise, and again at least a dozen large salmon (still technically called smolts, but much larger, they are 8in+). I landed three larger holdover browns, bigger than 16in (I guess the state didn't get all of them!). A lot of people were out, concentrated in the big pools. I saw a lot of rising fish, but of course I nymph fished. A good yellow Sally hatch was in progress, along with olives and a few Isonychia. Pretty good fishing, but don't be afraid to walk.

I almost forgot...in one area of the river, the sun was beating down on a grove of trees, all with golden yellow leaves. The yellowish light illuminating the river was obvious, so I put our color theories to the test. It worked.

Fishing was slower today (Oct. 11). I went out for a couple hours, and had to work a bit harder. Leaf hatch is much worse, water is really low. We need some rain. Olive hatch was good and many smaller fish were rising. Again huge crowds all over.

I only caught one salmon today, and the water is cooling down (56 deg). The change of seasons is imminent.
