I just use a commercial head cement thinner. I suppose a commercial thinner in bulk would be less expensive, but I worry about leaving an odor on the flies.
What should I use to thin my head cement. It has become as thick as resin, I assume the solvents are volatile and have flash off. Is acetone a good thinner or do I need something like styrene or methylmethacrylate?

You can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish.
I Ditched Head cement a long time ago because it gets gross to fast. I just use a bottle of rod varnish and a pin.. Never needs to be thined and it seems to work just fine, been using it for a few years now.. it really finishes things off..
i was watching a series of fly tying vids and the guy who put them on used varnish and a hat pin as well. I might have to check that out.
