    Brown Hackle Peacock

This is my first attempt at tying a wet fly, the Brown Hackle Peacock as described by Nymphmeister's list. I hope it is about right. I also tied a brown hackle and orange too.

Is it close? Now to learn to use them. Wets are not a steamer, not a nymph, but fished somewhere in-between. I am curious. I have never fished a wet. I am counting on you experienced folk to gudie me through this.

    Re: Brown Hackle Peacock

After 55 views, I thought at least one experienced wet fly person would let me know if I am on the right track. I fished two a week ago but cut short with a bunch of dry fly action, and I couldn't resist. Any thoughts on the general tie?

I'm not the experienced wet fly person you need, but I think the description of "gold tip" means a couple wraps of gold tinsel at the back end of the body, rather than a gold head. If you really want to go with a classic look, the tail should be a bit of feather rather than hackle.

The fly in the following link is obviously not a brown hackle peacock, but it does illustrate a "gold tip" and a classic red tail.

Your hackle and body are fine. I would tie the head with black thread.

    Hi,
Chris is pretty much on target with his post. The fly you have tied WILL catch trout, for sure. I've seen a number of variations on this pattern. Do some online searching for more patterns. There are a number of great databases showing various wet fly dressings as well as articles on wet fly fishing. Are you looking for classic American patterns? Wingless patterns? Do you need instructions on tying these flies? How can I (we) help you?

    Re: Brown Hackle Peacock

Thanks for the in-put. The first 8-10 years of fly fishing I fished only dry flies. This past 2 years I have been working on nymph fishing. The wet fly is still a mystery to me. I have read many of the wet fly posts, I would like to learn wet fly tying and fishing. So far I have not been successful and I switch back to nymphing, or if there is an obvious rising, I may try a dry now and then.

I would call myself a novice tyer, but I DO want to learn to tie wets too. The patterns that I am looking for are simple enough for me to tie, fish, etc. (I would prefer 20" + trout too )

    Sholgate.

like every thing else it takes time to become good at it, and that is very much the case with anything related to fly fishing, particularly fly tying.
I know some very good fly fishers, but they do not tie flies, but they know what they want in a good fly to fish with.

The majority classic old UK style peacock bodied wet flies were tied to imitate beetles, both aquatic and terrestrial. In many cases there is only the change of hackle used, others may have a gold tag and a tail, in most cases hackle fiber.

Here are two classics that l use often.
The Cock-Y Bonddu, which is a Welsh fly, it means red and black.
The other is called a Poacher.

Both are great flies for Browns, not question of doubt about that.

This August l will shoot a new DVD called the Masters Guide to Tying Wet and Soft hackle Flies.
I will spend a good deal of time talking about the materials, origins and use, and then techniques to tie the 5 major components of all wet and soft hackle fly patterns.
I am asked so often about doing this, l have decided that l will, while l am in Montana, in between fishing that is.
Wet Fly Ways has sold great numbers, l guess l need the tying DVD to compliment it.

I look forward to the DVD. There is more I can do as far as research. I better get on it before it gets warm around here!

I need to discipline myself to work with wets and not leave it when I am not successful within a short time. After looking at some more pages and sites, I have tied up a few more. I will submit pictures soon.
