    DW Transitional Caddis Pupa/Emerger

With caddis on the way, Davy sent me this bad boy to post up. It looks killer as he was playing with the fish in his tank with the fly. I am sure they were trying to eat the crap out of it.

OK, This is a fly pattern of mine that goes way back, all be it was a fly l had originated for stillwater fishing it is as deadly fished on moving water systems.

Here is the tying detail. It used my split thread method to form the body. We will shoot some of my tying techniques when l am in CT this April, fact l may tie this fly.

Abdomen is SLF standard, choice of colors may include.
    Insect green
    Dark olive
    Cream
    Tan
    Orange
    Yellow

    Body sheath.
    Swiss straw, clear or straw.

    Hackle.
Ginger to dark brown hen, brown partridge and grouse is also good.
    Color to match species.

    Thorax and head.
A dark dubbing, l use hares ear most if the time.

    Antenna
    Two brown mallard shoulder strands.

The body is formed by splitting thread, the only two that work are Danvilles 6/0 FM and Wapsi UTC 7O.
Thread color to match body. Do not use a dark thread for a light colored body.

The body is formed by splitting the thread 505 and inserting the dubbing material into the separated strands, then twisted and wound, what you are aiming to do is to create a body with min amount of material trapped and with a fly away effect, that is why you see the translucence in this fly body.
Regular single strand dubbing techniques will not work as well and neither will teh use of a dubbing loop as you add way extra thread and bulk.

After the body is wound Swiss straw is cut ti a width to surround the body.
The hackles is wound, the head formed and the two antenna tied in rearward.

This fly when fished will pulse with life and mimic the upward motion of a emerging caddis pupa.

Often as l not l will fish 2 or 3 of these at a time, or in conjunction with other wet and soft hackles.

Suggestion ... could this be the "TPO Fly of the Month - April 2009"?

Aaron ... could you or Davy do a video tying up this fly? Sure looks like it would be a killer down
on the Little Junita, Spring Creek, and Penns.

    Thanks!!!

    Re: DW Transitional Caddis Pupa/Emerger

I am going to be paying him to do a few flies so they will be put up in the Rockstar section only. Its fair since we are using the money for that purpose.

    Sirjohnny,

Any report from your trip to Central PA? Did the flies and suggestions that we gave you work? I am just curious since you were asking about it quite frequently and was just curious as to how it went.

    Re: DW Transitional Caddis Pupa/Emerger

    Aaron:

    - Little Juniata was flooded (downright dangerous) when I was there back in early January.

    - Spring Creek was up -- but fishable -- but only nailed four browns (one really nice 16 inch measured),
down in the Benner Springs area (right where the prison property begins).

    - Side note: I noticed the prison sign was torn down (this is about a mile or so walk downstream from
Benner Springs. Also, someone put up a bunch of "no parking" signs along the road down to the
prison property (look like they were printed on a home computer and placed in plastic holders and
    then stapled to the trees).

I did not see any signs saying to keep out of the prison property ... so am not sure if the property
(i.e. the canyon section) ever got transferred over to Penn State (as originally planned).

    - Anyhow, I got cold and had enough after 2 hours.

    - Been hitting the books up for nursing school (mid-life career change) pretty hard ... so no time to
fish since January. However, I did make the trip up to see Malinda (owner of Malinda's fly shop)
in Altmar, NY (Salmon River). I didn't fish ... but enjoyed the trip up. Snow is melted here in
Syracuse, but they have 2 or 3 feet still on the ground in Pulaski / Altmar area. Malinda says
best year ever for steelhead on the river. Unfortunately, time is a major issue. Also, I need to
grab some neoprene waders, as the Simms breathables don' cut it in 10 degree weather.

    - Had a good talk with Dawn Racundo (Yankee Fly Tackle in Pulsaki, NY). Looks like her and John
split up for good. Says she plans on selling the entire shop/hotel building as it's too much for one
person. Says ex-husband is not interestd in shop. She is a very nice person, (and so is he), so big
shock to see them split up (especially with a little 3 year old kid).

    - Next road trip to PA will be over Memorial Day weekend. Family has a reunion every year in
Boalsburg, PA (right outside State College - headwaters of Spring Creek). Also, have about 50+
relatives buried in the cemetary there along the highway in Boalsburg. So major family event, but
makes for nice day when coupled with a morning on Spring Creek.

    - Not much else going on. Been super cold (10-15 degrees) here in Syracuse. Tied up tons of those
cased caddis and Viladi worms. Also, tied up Barr Cranefly nymphs ... but used size 6 and size 8
Tiemco 200R for the hooks (on Charlie Craven's advice --- before I saw your post). Will need to
tie up some size 14's when I get a chance. Would be nice if a size 6 cranefly could pull some big
browns out of those major pools on the Little Juniata.

    - Anyhow, sorry to hijack the thread ... but it's cold outside, and I am bored with all the studying.

    Tight lines,

    Davy-
I remember seeing an article you did on this fly some years ago in either Fly Tyer or American Angler. I like the translucent shuck effect from the Swiss Straw.

It was in AA and also Fly Tyer some years ago as well as a number of EU mags, it is a killer fly believe me.

If we shoot the tying of this fly l will show you guys some other dubbing techniques, that will make you think some for applications otherwise.
