The best reference I have seen in this topic is Kelly Galloup's DVD for streamers. When he ties the Zoo Cougar, he spends a great deal of time talking about the spun deer hair head. Make sure you use the Gudebrod gel spun thread, it makes the job a lot easier. You can also check my fly-of-the-month on the Zoo Cougar.

one other thing remember to stack the hair tight ,pull down on the hair get it to ( explode ),then release a bit of tension and push it up tight to hair ,try to avoid even small gaps they show up later when you cut the hair .Also a cocain razor blade ( sory only way I know how to describe it ) does a nice job to help cut the hair evenly atleast to start .
A great way to get rid of gaurd hairs is to pinch the clump of hair then run two fingers to the end of the hairs then grab the other end and do the same till the shorties are gone .Damn im letting to much info out enough said good luck ;D

My favorite thread is the gelspun UTC (g.s.p) thread, it can really take a yanking. I've never broke it. Definitely check out Alan's fly of the month. Love that articulated Cougar!

I've been told and have read not to pack the head too tightly, then the fly doesn't "breathe" by intaking and expelling the water when you strip. They may not look as "perfect" a bit thinner, but they certainly catch more fish that way. The more buggy looking the better, I think.
