    Cassard the first attempt

Here's a fly that I just tried my hand at. I am tying a few more up to improve upong the looks. The name of this fly is called the Cassard. I find this fly to be more challanging than your common winged wet.

Now there's a fly the trout won't have trouble seeing! Nicely done.

    Hi Nutman:

The folding and palmering of the hackle was the easy part. The tricky part is the handling and tye in of the Tail and Wings without damaging them. The Barred Wood Duck and Goose Shoulder can be married pretty easy, except thay are vey delicate compared to working with Duck and Goose Quiils or Turkey wings. So material hnadling skills comes into play here. This is not your beginners fly.

I meant putting the wings on over the palmering ,I was mistaken it wasnt teal it was wood duck .Yes this is harder material to handle .The shoulders are more flimsy .I tried some of this with steelhead flys .They fish nice and have more movement .After one wet down though the fly never look the same .
I like turkey tail the best for shell backs ,it stays togeather .Goose shoulders come apart in the water ,they do however add life to the fly . Id like to see your version of the fontinalis fin .

    Hi nutman:

The trick to setting the wings over the palmering is to take your bodkin and form a v-notch out by pressing on the hackle. Once this is done the wings can be mounted pretty easy. This little trick allows the fly with the palmered hackle to still look normal. Hope this helps. Now the Fontianlis fin is a simple classic that I will tye up in a few days and post here for you to see.

    Nice fly there Fontinalis.
As a matter of interest here, when l mount wings on a palmered hackled fly l do it this way.
In my right hand the wing is held by the thumb and 3rd finger, then with my left thumb and 2nd finger l part the hackle, whilst doing so l then set the wing, transfer right thumb and 2nd finger to hold the wing and then set the thread two turns, check ll is well with wing set and finish the head wrap.

Wood duck can be a bitch when tied as the lower part of a married wing, it may help at times to give it a breath of hot steam before you use it.

    Take care

    Davy.
