Hooks & Sizes ?

Things are in progress and I find I am totally hooked on the Czech process. Now, as usual, always a question: In the patterns I have seen for Czech nymphs there are no mentions of hook size only a particular Euro hook. What hooks and sizes should I look for? As usual all answers I get places you in my will. ;D

You can make large heavy nymphs on a size 8. Smaller, lighter nymphs might be made on sizes 16-18. All of the other sizes are in the middle. So sizes 8-18 are all necessary.

Are you referring specifically to Czech style nymphs, or the various weighted nymphs to be used for Czech style nymphing? Czech/Polish flies are usually on scud hooks, but weighted flies can be put on many different types of hooks depending upon the pattern.

You can tie Czech style nymphs on any scud hook, the Tiemco 2499SP-BL Alain mentioned is a favorite hook of ours, it is barbless and has the Super Point, as well as a 3x wide hook gap. Europeans usually tie these type of nymphs on #8-16, but go as big as #6 if they need to accomodate more weight. #10 seems to be the most common size in European Czech nymphs. Vladi, in the Euro Nymphing DVD says he ties his woven Polish nymph on Tiemco 2457 in #6-12.

Don't get too hung up on what sizes the Europeans use though, we do the Euro nymphing using weighted flies from #4 3xl patterns down to little #20's. Any nymph can be tied weighted and used for Euro nymphing. Take some of your favorite go-to nymphs & add tungsten beads & lead underbodies to them. We do like hooks that are designed barbless, as they have longer points & retain the trout better when fighting them. Here is a great link to a page on Loren Williams website about barbless hooks:
