    Madison of the East?

I might be a stretch but then again maybe not. I fished a fine trout stream in the northern Catskills. It used to have a great reputation for coughing up big fish but for some reason it is not held in high regard by many fly anglers anymore. Regardless of what people say about this stream, there are tons of fish within it's banks and some very large ones as well. Even though I didn't land any "big" ones, i know that there are plenty to be had. I fished from about 10:30 until 4 and had the entire stream to myself the whole time I was there! Zero fishermen in sight is always a great bonus on your day off. Countless trout were brought to hand. It wwas a mix of wild rainbows and holdover/wild brown trout up to 18". It was a cold and windy day and never got above 40 degrees. All fish were caught on stoneflies and egg patterns.

    Here are some shots....

That last picture is stunning. The subtle color gradient is amazing. Stream looks great too. I think Fall is fast becoming my favorite time of year-no crowds!

I spent every summer with my grandparents in Margaretville when I was a kid and early teen. So, I know the Upper EB like the back of my hand. But all those years I never really got many chances to explore the soapbox. Gorgeous freestone though that doesn't get a lot of the pressure some of it's sisters get. Well at least fishing pressure. The Tube hatch is tremendous though.

I wish that the Upper EB was open now. I magine the size and numbers of the browns that go up there!

Does it have a closed season now? I thought it was open year round with the recent reg changes.

Last I knew the "extended season" ran thru the end of November. It would be cool if it is open all year, but I don't think that is the case. I'll look on the internet and post what I find. It reopens on the standard NY April 1st date as far as I know.
